This product originated from a group research assignment which challenged us to research and find a material which was currently waste, and repurpose it according to its properties to become the raw material for a new product. I worked as part of a team when designing this project, together we achieved the highest mark in the assignment, and developed the design before taking it forward to Ideolog and studio ZQ’s Wool-Ovation competition where it was selected as finalist.
My involvement : Research - Ideation - Concept generation - Prototyping - Manufacturing details - Distribution planning - Pitching to judge panel
Dagmat is a fully biodegradable weed mat and plant protector made from compressed, felted, dag wool.
During early stages of growth ,the cylindrical guard protects the tree. Then as the product breaks down it fertilizes seedlings, before completely decomposing and leaving no negative remains in the environment. This cradle to cradle life cycle helps aids tree growth while keeping plastic out of the environment. A significant improvement on Polypropylene products that are currently used as they require retrieving once trees are established or get left polluting the environment.
At 30x30cm, the mat is designed to reduce the weed growth around seedlings, while indicating appropriate clearance between plants. The accompanying protector, stands 30cm high around the tree and is held up by a bamboo stake threaded through holes in the material. Dimensions are consistent across both products to simplify manufacturing.
